Loving Ourselves This V-Day

When I think of Valentine's Day, I immediately associate it with giving and expressing love towards others. I get caught up in sending cards and candy, having a galentine’s night, and the need to create big romantic gestures. But what about making gestures of love towards ourselves? Let’s try to shift the spotlight inward and embrace the power of self-love this Valentine’s day!

Author and intuitive healer Sylvia NG believes that self-love can often be divided into 5 separate categories: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual. She often asks clients the question of “when was the last time you celebrated you? Why not start today?” Expression of self-love is constantly evolving and as we are all different individuals, we all may show self-love in a multitude of ways. Here are some ideas that can help you celebrate and honor the relationship you have with yourself. They are broken down into the 5 different self-love categories:

Physical

  • Ensuring you have an optimal amount of sleep

  • Moving your body on a daily basis

  • Decluttering your space (home and work!)

  • Treating yourself to your favorite meal

Emotional

  • Creating a list of your favorite quirks and qualities in yourself

  • Celebrating your accomplishments or obstacles you have been able to overcome

  • Holding space for yourself first

  • Meditation

  • Establishing a consistent morning and evening ritual

Mental

  • Listening to a new podcast or audiobook

  • Picking up an old hobby or engaging in a new one

  • Digital/social media detox

Social

  • Establishing boundaries when spending time with friends or family

  • Spending time with those who bring joy and support to your life

  • Joining a new community

  • Visiting local events

Spiritual

  • Gratitude journal

  • Practicing acceptance and forgiveness towards yourself

  • Connecting with nature

  • Daily affirmations

This Valentine’s Day we can all start to practice celebrating ourselves with some self-love and care. Remember that you are an extraordinary individual and that the love we start to foster within ourselves will radiate out to others!
