Ecotherapy: How Nature Impacts Mental Health

As we start to transition out of the dark and cold winter, I have been hearing many people mention how all of a sudden they have been feeling a lot better after taking a short walk outside, seeing the blue sky, and taking in the fresh air. Well it turns out, there is a reason for why embracing nature can drastically improve our mood! We as humans are a part of the ecosystem and are inherently connected to the earth and our natural environment.  Have you ever heard of ecotherapy? Let’s talk about it!

Ecotherapy (or green therapy) incorporates various therapeutic activities that focus on connecting our mind and body to our natural environment. Benefits of engaging with nature can include stress reduction, emotional healing, mental clarity, and physical wellness. Here is a quick list of ecotherapy activities you can do to tap into your innate connection with the Earth:

  • Nature walks: Try engaging all of your senses while taking a leisurely stroll in a park, along a trail, near the lake, or whatever natural environment you prefer! Be mindful of the little things like the sound of the leaves in the wind, how the sunlight feels on your body, and the fresh crisp air as you take deep breaths.

  • Opening windows: Even if you’re not fully able to get outside, just opening your windows can invite fresh air and sunlight into your space that can be rejuvenating and help with stress levels and focus.

  • Gardening: This can look like tending to a backyard garden, maintaining your houseplants, or even volunteering at a local garden. This activity can help relaxation, incorporate movement, and create a sense of accomplishment.

  • Outdoor meditation: Try finding an outdoor location that typically feels like a tranquil space where you can feel mental clarity. Take some deep breaths and check in with your body and notice what sensations you are feeling. Notice the ground underneath you and the sights/sounds/smells as you center yourself.

Essentially, fostering a connection with nature can boost our mood, bring a sense of peace, and nourish our bodies. In the midst of the excitement of transitioning out of the cold months and amongst the typical hustle of daily life, try taking a moment to slow your pace and maybe experiment with some green therapy activities!
